Kindergarten Foundational Skills: How to Recognize Learning Gaps Early

Kindergarten foundational skills do not have to be firmly in place on the first day of school. Children come into kindergarten with different backgrounds, experiences, knowledge, and abilities. Some may already know every letter and number, while others may have very little experience with them. What matters most isn’t necessarily what students know when they arrive, but how they respond once you begin teaching them.

Students don’t fall behind academically overnight. Learning gaps often develop through lots of little missed opportunities, which is why the beginning of kindergarten is such an important time to pay attention. You want to observe where students are, provide the support they need, and watch how they progress. Your job isn’t to panic when a child doesn’t know something yet, but to notice, support, teach, and then observe what happens next.

What Should Kindergarteners Know at the Beginning of the Year?

It’s important to remember that children do not need to enter kindergarten already knowing all of the skills you’re going to teach them. If a student doesn’t know their letters and sounds at the beginning of the year, for example, that doesn’t automatically mean there is a problem. You’re going to spend the first couple of months teaching letter names and sounds so that every student can develop a strong foundation.

Instead of looking at what a student doesn’t know and immediately deciding they’re behind, think about what that information tells you. Where is this child starting, what have they already been exposed to, and what do you need to teach them? Think about what extra practice might help them as they learn. Then, after you’ve provided strong instruction and support, look at whether they’re making progress.

Foundational Literacy Skills to Watch

Some of the most important kindergarten foundational skills for literacy include letter names and sounds, phonological awareness, fine motor skills, and oral language development. You shouldn’t expect every student to have all of these skills mastered at the beginning of kindergarten. Instead, you want to observe what they can do now and see how those skills develop as you teach them.

Letter Names and Sounds

At the beginning of the year, notice which letters students recognize and which ones they don’t. Pay particular attention to the letters in their names because these are often some of the first letters children learn. If a student doesn’t recognize any letters or sounds, including the letters in their own name, that’s something you’ll want to keep an eye on. It doesn’t mean you need to panic, but it does mean you want to make sure that student gets meaningful practice.

If a student doesn’t know the letter Q before you’ve taught it, that’s okay because you’re going to teach it. The more important question is what happens after you teach it. If you’ve taught a letter and a student still isn’t learning it, they may need more repetition and practice. If you’ve provided that additional practice and they’re still not progressing, then you have information that can help you decide on your next steps.

Even children who enter kindergarten already reading benefit from explicit work with letters and sounds. A student may have memorized words without necessarily having the foundational skills needed to sound out an unfamiliar or nonsense word. Spending time on these foundational skills makes sure every student has the understanding they need to continue growing as a reader.

Phonological Awareness

Phonological awareness is another important area to observe, including skills such as rhyming and identifying or isolating beginning sounds in words. Students may not be able to do these things immediately, and that’s okay. Instead, notice what happens when you provide instruction and practice. Can they hear a rhyme before they’re able to produce one themselves, or can they identify a beginning sound with support?

These skills take time and repeated practice to develop. What you want to watch is whether students are beginning to understand the skill as you work on it with them. Give them the exposure they need before deciding there is a larger concern.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor development also plays an important role in the kindergarten classroom. Watch students as they hold pencils and crayons and think about whether they’ve had much experience using them before. Notice what their grip looks like, how they write their name, and whether they can write it without looking at an example. You can also notice whether they’re using uppercase letters, lowercase letters, or a combination.

These are observations, not necessarily red flags. A child writing their entire name in uppercase letters may simply not have learned lowercase letters yet. Once you’ve taught those letters, you can help them begin using lowercase letters in their name. It’s all information that helps you understand where the child is starting.

If students need help with their pencil grip, try supports such as pencil grips or small golf pencils. You can also have them hold a cotton ball with their pinky and ring finger while writing so those fingers aren’t being used to hold the pencil. There are lots of strategies for supporting fine motor development, and sometimes children simply haven’t had enough exposure or practice yet.

Oral Language Is Part of the Literacy Foundation

Listen to your students talk because oral language gives you important information about their literacy foundation. How is their vocabulary, and how well can they communicate their ideas? Can you understand them, and can their classmates understand them? When they tell a story, does it make sense?

Students need plenty of opportunities to develop oral language throughout the kindergarten day. Create opportunities for children to talk, repeat what others have said, retell familiar stories, and make up stories of their own. These experiences help students build the language skills that support their literacy development. Oral language should have a strong place in your classroom.

Foundational Math Skills in Kindergarten

You can approach early math skills in much the same way by starting with observation. Look at what students know and don’t know, while remembering that a child may simply not have been exposed to a skill yet. Your job is to make sure they’re getting plenty of opportunities to experience and practice these kindergarten foundational skills.

Counting is an important place to begin. Give students opportunities to count as a class, count aloud with you, and count physical objects. As they count objects, watch for one-to-one correspondence and whether they’re keeping track of the objects they’ve already counted. Notice if they’re counting an object more than once or organizing the objects in a way that helps them count accurately.

Number Recognition Isn’t Everything

Recognizing written numbers is important, but understanding what those numbers represent is even more important. A student might recognize the numeral 4, but if they don’t understand that a group of four dots represents four, recognizing the numeral isn’t as meaningful yet. You want students to develop a strong understanding of the concept of four, not just recognize what the written number looks like.

Subitizing is related to this foundational understanding. If students see four dots, can they recognize that there are four without counting each dot individually? Cardinality is also important because students need to understand that the final number they say when counting tells them how many objects are in the group. These are all skills you can practice regularly through simple classroom activities and warm-ups.

Number order also develops through repeated counting and practice. Students need opportunities to say the numbers in order while they’re counting objects, but you can also take the objects away and see whether they can continue saying the numbers correctly. All of these observations help you see what students actually understand about numbers rather than focusing only on whether they recognize written numerals.

Observe Students Before You Worry About Assessing Them

At the beginning of kindergarten, spend more time observing students than simply assessing them. Watching how a student works can tell you so much about what they understand and where they need support. Watch them count and notice where they get stuck, whether they lose track of objects, or whether there’s one number they consistently skip. Just as importantly, notice what they’re doing correctly.

You can do the same thing with literacy and fine motor skills. Watch students hold a pencil and identify letters, noticing whether they recognize the letters in their name or only know uppercase letters. All of this tells you important information about where they are. Let those observations guide your instruction and the support you provide.

Knowing what students can do is just as important as noticing what they can’t do yet. Their strengths tell you where to begin and help you decide how to move them forward. When you meet students where they are, you can provide support that actually matches what they need instead of making assumptions based on where you think they should be.

Early Support Can Keep Learning Gaps From Growing

You don’t need to wait for report cards to address something you’re noticing. You also don’t have to immediately begin formal small groups, especially if the rest of your class isn’t ready to work independently during centers or math stations. Small groups work best when the other students are able to be independent, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to provide extra support.

Sit beside a student while they’re working and provide the support they need in that moment. Give them an alphabet chart, offer a pencil grip, provide a counting organizer, or give them a smaller number of objects to count than other students. You can provide extra practice and differentiation without making it an official targeted small group.

That extra support early in the year can make a big difference for students who enter kindergarten with less foundational knowledge than their classmates. You don’t want to wait and allow those differences to turn into bigger learning gaps. The goal is to notice what students need and respond as early as you can.

Look at Progress, Not Just the Starting Point

A student’s starting point gives you important information, but their progress after instruction tells you even more. Imagine a student enters kindergarten without knowing any letters, which can be completely understandable. You teach all 26 letters, provide strong whole-class instruction, sit beside the student during handwriting practice, give them access to an alphabet chart, and find extra ways for them to practice.

After all of that, the student still can’t identify the letters you’ve taught. That’s different from a student simply arriving without letter knowledge. The concern isn’t that the child didn’t know the letters when they arrived. The concern is that they’re not learning them after receiving instruction, practice, and support.

At that point, you have useful information to help you consider more formal intervention, targeted small groups, or conversations with administration about appropriate next steps. You also have months of information about what you’ve already tried and how the student responded. That’s much more helpful than simply knowing that the student entered kindergarten without a particular skill.

Sometimes Students Simply Need Exposure

Sometimes extra exposure is exactly what a student needs. If you notice two weeks into school that one student doesn’t recognize any numbers from zero to 10 while their classmates do, you don’t have to wait until your whole-class curriculum reaches those numbers. Spend five minutes working with that child while other students are engaged in independent activities. Introduce the numbers, play games, and make the practice fun.

The same approach can work with letters. If a child enters kindergarten with no letter knowledge, teach those letters with the whole class and make sure the student gets extra opportunities to practice. Let the family know where the child is starting and what you’re working toward, and give them opportunities to practice what you’re teaching at school.

Then watch what happens over the next several weeks. Some students who start with zero letter knowledge will learn all of their letters once they’ve had consistent instruction and extra practice. They simply needed the exposure. By noticing the gap and responding early, you gave them the opportunity to build the foundation they needed instead of letting that gap continue to grow.

Observe, Support, and Respond Early

Students come into kindergarten from all different places, and they don’t need to arrive with every foundational skill already in place. Your responsibility is to figure out where they are and help them move forward. Observe carefully, teach foundational skills explicitly, and provide extra practice when students need it. Most importantly, pay attention to whether students are progressing after you’ve given them meaningful instruction and practice.

Don’t wait months to respond to something you can already see. If a student needs extra practice, give it early and continue observing how they respond. If you’re providing strong instruction, differentiation, accommodations, and repeated practice and the student still isn’t learning, that’s when you have important information to guide your next steps.
